MY STORY

I'm Sonja and I'm a special kind of photographer. I shoot photos on land but also underwater and I have a very particular specialisation: underwater macro photography!
There is a plenitude of photographers websites about the underwater world. But only a few of them are about the smallest of the smallest of the underwater creatures. This site is not meant to be an encyclopedia for identification purposes; its only, modest, purpose is to share with you some of the beauty my husband and I have discovered under the sea’s surface.
It’s a collection of a few of my vivid color photographs made on one of more than 800 dives into this alien, difficult to access, sometimes dangerous world.
The Oceans are truly an alien planet right here on Earth. Mankind has explored less than 5 percent of the oceans that contain 80% of all life on earth. That doesn’t even scratch the surface.
“In every drop of water there is a story of life, in every grain of sand there is a story of the earth. The Sea, once it casts its spell holds one in its net of wonder forever” (Jacques-Yves Cousteau)
Isn’t it marvelous that as a scuba diver you can explore an alien world right here on earth? Since our jobs in the Belgian Foreign Service brought us to Asia in 2003, my husband and I have spent hundreds of hours under water and seen things that are of a rare, sometimes unearthly and unexpected beauty.
This is especially true if you have a look at the smaller critters of the underwater world through a powerful macro lens.
The flamboyantly decorated tiny marine animals you will discover on this website leave us wondering how their unusually spectacular bright and colorful bodies protect them from being attacked beneath the sea beds. Their dazzling and striking colors make us gaze at them in awe. These marine animals are amongst the ocean’s most beautiful creatures as they’re often decorated with extremely striking and brilliant colors.
As an added bonus I will also publish some of my land based photos and we will try to regularly add new posts to our travel blog. And I promise to update this site on a regular basis so do come back from time to time!
